Guidance on Artificial Intelligence (AI)

(Updated: Jan. 10, 2025, 7:48 a.m.)
Extension is developing guidelines and best practices for utilizing artificial intelligence ("AI"), particularly generative AI tools like ChatGPT, which can help create a variety of content, including text, images, videos, audio and more.

This information will evolve and expand over time, based on feedback from a broad range of Extension voices, along with key stakeholders, partners and the public. As the opportunities, issues and needs related to AI in Extension are better understood, our approach could branch out in any number of directions.

In the meantime, our goal is to begin laying the groundwork for the responsible, productive and strategic adoption of AI in Extension. Please take time to review these best practices and considerations:

Artificial Intelligence (AI) Guidance and Best Practices for Extension

As AI becomes more prominent and prevalent in all aspects of society, this technology will play an increasingly important role in Extension’s efforts to connect with stakeholders across the state. While there's not yet a formal NC State or CALS policy regarding the use of AI resources, our NC State Extension strategic plan affirms the need to further explore and embrace this technology.

Used responsibly, and balanced with sound judgment and principles, AI tools like ChatGPT can increase efficiency, enhance productivity and open doors to a wider variety of audiences.

But remember: while AI technology is a powerful tool, YOU are the experts. AI can augment your efforts and expertise -- not replace them.

Moving forward, we will pursue opportunities to collaborate, capture feedback and collectively update this guidance as our understanding of the long-term implications of AI on Extension and our stakeholders continues to take shape.
