Digital Accessibility Compliance Deadline Extended

(Updated: April 28, 2026, 3:36 p.m.)

[This update is a modified version of a 3D memo originally posted on April 27, 2026.]

Please note that the U.S. Department of Justice extended the digital accessibility compliance deadline for public entities to meet the new Americans with Disabilities Act Title II guidelines to April 26, 2027.

That said, the university may also be subject to a similar rule under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act enforced by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. That rule has a compliance deadline of May 11, 2026 — this is the date by which the university is working toward compliance.

What Does This Mean for Me?

At this time, the technical requirements remain the same and we ask you to continue on your roadmap working toward digital accessibility compliance based on the deadline of May 11, 2026.

Thank you to the many people who have worked diligently for the past two years. Digital accessibility isn’t only about compliance. It’s about improving usability and ensuring access for everyone; it’s the right thing to do. Please keep moving forward with your work.

Keep in mind: Digital accessibility is an ongoing journey, not a destination. As you continue assessing and updating your digital materials, please review our Extension digital accessibility resources and NC State's digital accessibility hub for detailed guidance, training and tools.
